So, the kind of birth control pill I take now is illegal in the US. I will have to find something new in the near future. I'd like to hear what other people are using, if you like it or not, any side effects you've had, etc.

I started off on Seasonale, which is the one where you only get your period 4x/year. Worked wonderfully, but I wound up gaining a lot of weight that I couldn't lose, no matter what I did. Went back to the doctor, switched to Yaz, which is back to monthly periods, but it did WONDERS for cramps (the reason I was put on birth control to start out with - I would be curled up in a ball, weeping, even after taking Darvocet) and has made it possible for me to lose weight again.
I liked both for the most part, but Yaz is the clear winner. The only problem I've found is that my breasts got a crapload bigger. Before birth control, I was a 32C, which was hard enough to find. After Seasonale, I was looking for 32Ds, and now, with Yaz, I'm having a hell of a time staying in the Ds.
My suggestion is to avoid the patch and the ring like the plague. I know that some scientific studies have shown that both forms of birth control release extra hormones when they get hot. So hot showers, heavy excercise, sex, and anything else that would up your body temperature are prone to make them less effective in the long run. Additionally, I hear that you're supposed to remove the ring for sex...but that seems like a bad idea to me, because, let's say you drop it somewhere, or you forget about it, and now you don't have it in, and he didn't wear a condom because you're on birth control, and now you have a much higher risk of getting pregnant because you're not being pumped full of fake hormones...
Anyway, I do suggest trying Yaz if you think it's acceptable. It proclaims 3-day periods (mine still lasted 5, but whatever) and it really does work for PMS symptoms. Plus, it has a water pill built in, so you're less likely to put on water weight. w00t!

It's not illegal, but in the states RU486 isn't really considered birth control.

Actually on my second injection of Depo Provera, working great. No bad side effects, extremely short and painless periods, no remembering to place patches, insert rings, or take pills.

What are you currently on?
I have tried the Lo Oval pill and right now after 10 years am thinking of switching. It works pretty good but I am having some depression lately with it. But seeing if it is just depression or the pill causing it.
Did the ring. Which was so-so. Didn't like the rate of pregnancies while on it so I decided to stay away from it.

It's called Zyrona. It's the kind that has two hormones in it, which actually makes it less safe. It's illegal in the US because it causes the feminization of male fetuses (due to the extra hormone). It's the only birth control I have ever been on. I actually got put on it for dermatological reasons, but now I'm so used to being on birth control I think I'm going to stay on something. For most of my life I was very anti-birth control. I just couldn't bring myself to take a pill to make my body not work right. Anyway, the pills I'm on didn't give me any side effects, but there are a lot of possible ones that could be quite serious, such as blood clots. Hormone related migranes run in my family, so that's one reason I've been hesitant to go on the pill for many years. The pill that I'm on is really nice because it doesn't matter if you miss a day, like most pills. This pill works as a morning after pill as well, so if you forget it's no big deal.

Ortho Tri-cyclen was HELL on my skin.

I'm on Cilest and I never had any side effects with this one, but I think it's relatively low on hormones. It's marketed in US as OrthoCyclen.

Lin: Can you tell us what's actually in Zyrona? I'm having a real hard time finding it myself. Clearly it's ethinyl estradiol (so, like every common OCP used in the U.S.), but i can't figure out exactly what the other hormone is. It seems to be given as "cyproteronacetat," but I can't begin to figure how that translates.

[Edit:] Ok, I found it. And holy crap, Lin. It's a bloody anti-androgen. What a silly idea for a birth-control drug. I'd suggest you just take any normal OCP. You'll probably do fine. If you want to keep somewhat consistent, you can look for one with 35 mcg of estradiol (like Ortho-Cyclen), which is what you've been taking, but they're mostly around that range anyway.

Well, like I said I was put on it because of my skin, not because I was looking for birth control. The birth control aspect was just a happy side effect.

Hey, nobody specified as to how permanent they wanted it to be. And while it is true that sometimes vasectomies grow back, it's a good option for many people. And no hormonal side effects, which is good for me, because I don't need help regulating my period or making cramping any better. I've found that as long as I get enough excersize my cramping is kept to a tolerable level.

Seasonale and Depo: I've seen both put tons of weight on the girls taking them. One girl went on Depo, starting gaining weight like crazy, and went off it, which actually made it worse. She's never been the same again. [Which is really too bad.]

Ortho-Cyclen is the benchmark, I think, for girls over here. Some people have side effects, but you're basically taking it now, so I don't think you're likely to see a change.

I got really intrigued by the patch. Until recently I didn't even know it existed. I have a friend that's on it and she really likes it. There would be a lot less remembering required with the patch than with pills. (That's the best part of the pills I'm on now- doesn't matter if you forget sometimes.)

Yeah that why I don't take pills, was fine when I was taking them to regulate my period, but I'm far too forgetful to remember to take a pill everyday at roughly the same time and trust that to assure I won't get pregnant. Side effects for everything is different for everyone, there are tons of horror stories for everything, but there's a lot of options and a good doctor will let you try them all out to find what fits best for you.

Depo caused some severe side-effects in Jae when she was on it. In her case it was massive weight loss and almost premature onset of menapause.

With Depo, if you decide you want to have kids, you need to be off Depo for A WHILE before you start trying to get pregnant, else you have a higher risk than normal for birth defects.

We use the 'all natural' keep track of your temperature/mucus, be aware of your body method. No babies so far, so it's working for us.

Of course, we have a vaccine for that virus now.

Some STD's can also be transmitted through oral sex (although it's not as common as genital to genital contact)

Right before my wife got pregnant with our third kid, yep.

Actually, we seem to not fit any statistics for these things. The failure rate is supposed to be 1/1000, but she thinks it wasn't put in properly.

One of my friends used that in high school. Not only did she still get pregnant, but she said it hurt like a bitch if she moved the wrong way.

I have been using Yasmin for over a year. I started because of PMS and cramps too, they were becoming unbearable, and it definitely helped a lot with that. I also lose less blood, which used to be so bad that I'd get anaemic from time to time.

As far as moods go, I think it has made me less moody, but I also feel a bit more numb. Of course, that could also have something to do with the difference between high-powered New York City and sleepy Amsterdam. But it has definitely calmed me down.

As far as weight goes, I didn't see a difference, until recently when I started gaining a bit, and I do think it is related to the pill. Including in the breasts, which started out in the beginning too.

Generally, I'm pretty happy with it, and I have friends who like it too. I recommend giving it a try.
